Tripoli, County of
Crusader principality in what is now Lebanon, founded by Raymond of Toulouse after the First Crusade (qq.v.). Its capital was Tripolis (q.v.), which the Crusaders conquered in 1109 with Byzantine material support. Raymond's oath of loyalty to Alexios I Komnenos (q.v.), reaffirmed by his successors, allowed Alexios I and his immediate successors, John II and Manuel I (qq.v.), to establish a semblance of authority in a region that had once belonged to Byzantium (q.v.).
